Prevent life insurance scams

This type of scam has become increasingly common in the province. Fraudsters use a variety of tactics to obtain personal and financial information from victims. Vigilance is key. Here is how to protect yourself.

 How does this scam work?

The authorities believe that the fraudsters exploit the information on death notices to contact a member of the deceased's family. They often introduce themselves using a common first name and claim to represent a well-known life insurance company, stating that the person they are speaking to is the beneficiary of a payment. In reality, these fraudsters use this information to obtain more personal details. This data can then be used to:

  • Create false identity documents
  • Apply for credit in your name
  • Steal your money and disappear with the funds

How can you protect yourself?

To avoid falling into the trap, adopt these good practices:

  • Never share your personal information.
  • Be wary of unexpected calls concerning payments.
  • Hang up and call the company's official number directly.

What should you do if you suspect fraud?

Your suspicions should never be ignored. Follow these steps to act quickly:

  • Report it immediately to your insurance company.
  • Report it to your local police department to obtain a file number.
  • Report the fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
